The difference comes down to how serious the hazard is.

• Danger signs are generally used where a hazard is likely to be life-threatening. They are easy to spot: the word DANGER in white on a red oval, inside a black header.
• Warning signs are generally used for hazards that could cause harm but are not likely to be life-threatening. They typically use black on yellow.

The right choice depends on the nature and level of the hazard at your site. If you're unsure, review your workplace risk assessment or seek advice from a qualified WHS professional.

AS 1319 – Safety signs for the occupational environment is the Australian Standard for the design and use of safety signs in workplaces. It sets out sign categories (such as danger, warning, mandatory, prohibition, emergency information and fire), along with the colours, shapes, layouts and symbols used so that signs are recognised quickly and consistently.

Many Australian workplace safety signs are designed with reference to AS 1319 requirements. Our Danger signs follow the AS 1319-1994 danger sign layout, as described on each product page. Customers should ensure the signage they select is appropriate for their workplace, hazard and applicable regulatory requirements.

Sign shape also matters. For example, a red circle with a diagonal bar means "don't", while a blue circle means "must".

Every sign in our range is available in three materials. Choose the one that suits where and how long the sign will be used:

• Colorbond: rigid pre-painted steel. It's our toughest option and best suited to durable, longer-term signage, including permanent outdoor installation on fences, gates and walls.
• Corflute: lightweight fluted polypropylene. It's weatherproof and economical, and commonly used for temporary signage, construction sites, events and short-term projects.
• PVC Foam Board: smooth, rigid and lightweight, with a clean finish. It's useful for indoor walls and doors and for sheltered outdoor areas.

For a permanent outdoor sign, we generally recommend Colorbond. As rigid pre-painted steel, it's the toughest material in our range and suits fences, gates and exterior walls.

Corflute is weatherproof and a good fit for temporary outdoor use. PVC Foam Board is best kept to sheltered outdoor areas, such as under an awning or a covered entry.

How long any sign lasts outdoors depends on its exposure to sun, weather and wear. If your sign needs to be seen in headlights or low light, consider the Reflective finish.

Corflute is usually the most practical choice. It's lightweight, weatherproof and economical, so it suits temporary sites, events and short-term projects where signs are put up, moved and taken down regularly.

All three are available in both sizes and in Reflective or Non-Reflective finishes.

Our signs come in two sizes: 450 × 300 mm and 600 × 450 mm. When choosing, consider:

• Viewing distance: the further away people will be, the larger the sign should be.
• Available space: measure the wall, fence, gate or post where the sign will go.
• Amount of wording: longer messages are easier to read on a larger sign.
• Conditions: glare, low light, dust or moving vehicles all make signs harder to read.

If the sign needs to be read from further away, such as at a site entrance or across a yard, choose the larger size.

The best method depends on the sign material and the surface you're mounting it to. Common options include:

• Screws or rivets into walls, doors or timber, using fixings suited to the surface.
• Posts and sign brackets for free-standing signs or roadside and car-park locations.
• Cable ties or wire for attaching lightweight signs, such as Corflute, to fences and temporary barriers.
• Suitable adhesive systems, such as mounting tape, for lightweight signs on smooth, clean indoor surfaces.
